An unusual swastika pattern incuse
Lot 642
BITHYNIA. Herakleia Pontika. Circa 510-500 BC. Hekte (Electrum, 10 mm, 2.54 g, 1 h). Head of Herakles to left, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. Incuse clockwise swastika pattern. BMC 7-11 ('Erythrai'). W. Fischer-Bossert: Die Elektronhekten mit dem Herakleskopf: Herakleia Pontike, nicht Erythrai, in: NZ 126 (2020), 147 (V-/R100). SNG Kayhan 737-8 ('Erythrai'). SNG von Aulock 1942 ('Erythrai'). Very rare. The obverse struck off center, otherwise, very fine.

Ex Leu Web Auction 28, 9 December 2023, 1071 and previously from a British collection of electrum coins from Lesbos and Ionia, formed in the early 2000s.

Rather than the ubiquitous quadripartite incuse square, this coin curiously employs a clockwise swastika pattern on the reverse, a variety known only from this singular reverse die.
